The vehicle systems named most often in Chevrolet Silverado complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
Driving down interstate about 65 the light on dash came on stated low engine oil stop engine at same time could smell smoke and saw smoke coming from under hood. I pulled over as fast as I could and by that time the smoke was pouring out from under hood. I turned engine off and I popped hood got out and slowly opened in case was on fire. It was not but I saw oil all over my engine and dripping from under vehicle. The front tire was covered with oil as well as down side of my truck. I saw where I pulled over a long oil streak. Oil kept leaking oil and large puddle formed under engine on side of road.
While driving vehicle service power steering light came on had no power steering had to wrestle steering wheel no power steering a smaller person would not have able to handle it
I received a notice via OnStar of a P129 code of a critical issue with engine or transmission system on my 2020 Silverado pickup after I pulled on to the highway. Vehicle reduced engine power warning and engine light came on. I was forced to put vehicle in neutral and restart vehicle several times. This code indicates fuel pump control module being defective. After researching, there seems to be issues with this on the the following; General Motors has issued voluntary emission recalls (such as bulletins N252516900 and N262558690) for the fuel pump power control module on select 2021â2023 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles. The issue with my vehicle is the same.
These 6.2 Liters are failing and there is no fix. GM claims my motor passed a test but not knowing if and when it will break down leaving me stranded or worse in a horrible accident with engine failure is not safe. My lane assist is now out as well, the version is old and GM wants to charge to update it (only 60k miles on the truck). Top it off with this new recall my oil changes are over $150 for supercar oil. The deprecation of this truck with know recalls is another issue. I can't get rid of this because it isn't worth much anymore. DO NOT BUY GM OR CHEVY!! So sad to see them fail their customer like this.
I was pulling in my driveway and lost all steering, the wheel wouldn't turn, truck was still running fine no issues but the steering was out. Within 2 minutes the truck was fully engulfed in flames. With the fire starting from the hydroboost/power steering area.
2021 Silverado with 5.3 engine/8spd transmission/38,000 miles just outside of the 5-year powertrain warranty *No current recalls under this VIN as of 10/07/2026* Undiagnosed issues with symptoms similar to transmission or rear end slippage, torque converter or clutch pack problems. No warning lights or messages have appeared 1) Vehicle seems to hunt for proper gearing between 30-40 mph (3rd to 4th gear) with light shuddering before shifting gears. Occurred 20+ times 2) Sudden jerk when taking off from dead stop. Feels like being lightly bumped from behind then drives normally. Occurred 4 times 3) Only noticed when towing appx 6,000lb trailer descending down a hill - A one-time loud clunk w…
Service Trailer Brake System error. There's a known issue for a faulty wire harness and BCM. Error makes it hard to drive and see the speed, keeps popping up.
Chafed or Broken Wiring Harness (Very Common) â This is the most frequent cause on newer GM vehicles. The factory wiring harness to the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor is too short or secured with an overly tight zip tie. Engine movement causes the LIN bus wire to chafe and break internally near the connector.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.
This preliminary PI was created to advise techniians in the field that they will not be able to perform a GDS automated bleed with the scan tool dues to a issue with the software in the scan tool
This preliminary information is to inform technicians and customers to not replace any parts at this time. This PI will be updated to a bulletin when a repair is available.
This preliminary information is for technicians that may see DTCs that are history and should not perform any part replacements. They should follow the notes mentioned prior to anything being replaced.
This Preliminary information communicates to dealers a procedure to reset the radio.

This PI provides Diagnostics tips on how the LIN bus works and how to diagnosis it.
General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall. Certain vehicles may have a condition which can cause the fuel pump power control module to fail. If this were to occur, fuel flow to the engine could be interrupted. Dealers will replace the fuel pump power control module.
This preliminary information communicates an issue with a service column lock message and DTC U3000. Engineering is working on the issue and in the meantime dealerships are to reset/clear the DTC and perform four sleep cycles to verify the DTC does not return.
This PI communicates the proper part numbers for transmission connectors and internal harness to prevent confusion when ordering
Certain vehicles may have received transmission mounting bolts that do not meet expected hardness specifications. Loose or failed bolts may result in hard shifting from the transmission and/or noise. Dealers will replace both transmission mounting bolts.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
On January 16, 2026, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ26001. This investigation was opened to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274. ODI has received complaints alleging engine failure in vehicles after the recall remedy had been completed, whether that remedy involved an oil viscosity change or a complete engine replacement. From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20

Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010–2026, owners most often name: engine, power train, electrical system. 12,603 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
