What BMW 535D owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See BMW 535D safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

Am experiencing repeat high-pressure fuel pump (hpfp/cp4) failure on my 2014 bmw 535d. First incident was covered an extended warranty. Policy then with the second being cover under then recently issued recall of the matter. Now i am experiencing however another cp4 failure with the dealership refusing to cover the repair saying the recall was completed . Given that the vehicle already received bmw corrective action for this known issue and the same component has now failed again, CP4 failures are a well known document concern with the diesel bmw community and this failure creates potential safety risk(stalling) I believe it is reasonable to expect bmw to participate in covering this repair …
Component/system failed: High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failed, releasing metal swarf that contaminated the entire fuel system. Components are at Niello BMW Sacramento (2020 Fulton Ave, Sacramento CA 95825) and available for inspection upon request (RO #XXX includes tech photos of swarf).Safety risk: On October 10, 2025, while driving on the freeway at highway speed, the engine suddenly lost all power and stalled completely in heavy traffic. No acceleration was possible â immediate rear-end collision risk and stranded in hazardous location requiring emergency tow.Confirmed by dealer: Yes â Niello BMW Sacramento (authorized BMW dealer), RO #XXX (Oct 2025). Hello, I have a 2014 BMW 535D, with only 46k miles. On September 14, 2025, my family experienced an unexpected and horrific incident that could have resulted with tragic consequences. This is not acceptable. While driving on the freeway at approximately 70 MPH, our vehicle completely malfunctioned in the fast lane and came to an abrupt stop. The thought of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and crashing into us and potentially causing an explosion would have been catastrophic. Luckily, CHP pushed our vehicle to the shoulder after waiting fearfully for 20 minutes. I had a diagnostic report completed of my vehicle and it identified that the engine failure was due to the high pre…
Car stalled at 119,000 miles giving no service codes or indications of need for service. Car stalled again at 122,000 miles and would not restart. BMW specialist found high pressure fuel pump failure and contamination of all surrounding fuel system components. Research into this issue shows a systemic failure of the high pressure fuel pumps on these vehicles but this particular VIN number is not supported in the existing recall. The repair cost of the components is greater than the value of the vehicle, with no defect coverage from BMW.
On [XXX], the coolant connector flange on my 2016 BMW 535d (VIN: [XXX] ) catastrophically failed, causing complete coolant loss. I immediately contacted BMW of Las Vegas and was instructed to drive it in despite fluid visibly leaking through the undercarriage. The next day, [XXX], BMW performed Recall 21V-907 (EGR cooler replacement), which involved draining and reconnecting the coolant circuitâbut they left the failed flange in place. The failed flange connects directly to the new EGR coolant return hose installed under the recall. BMW had full access to the part but chose not to inspect or replace it. The dealer submitted a consequential damage claim to BMW North America, which was deni…
High pressure fuel pump failed ⦠theres a recall for some exact model of cars but mines not on the list
The contact owns a 2016 BMW 535D. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of motive power. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with high-pressure fuel pump failure. The vehicle was left at the local dealer, where it remained for further repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000 (Fuel System, Diesel); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.
Valve cover leak Oil filter housing leak Super common that these items leak in the bmw N57 diesel engines. Increased risk of fire. I am in the Facebook group with many other owners of the same engine, and almost everyone runs into the same problems by 100,000 miles.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle âÃÂÃÂdischarged batteryâÃÂàcomplaints.

The following two fault codes will be stored in the DME: 032B43 - Low fuel pressure system, electric fuel pump: pressure value too low CDA594 - Message (- 0x33E) missing, receiver DME, transmitter TFE
Customers may state that the alarm system (DWA) is not active after locking their unoccupied vehicle. Depending on the vehicleâÃÂÃÂs equipment and settings, no acoustic or optical confirmation (folding the mirrors/blinking confirmation) is noticeable. Additionally, the red anti-theft alarm LED in the interior mirror does not briefly flash every 2 seconds, indicating the alarm is armed.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20
Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2014–2016, owners most often name: engine, fuel/propulsion system, fuel system, diesel. 73 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
