What BMW 328D owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See BMW 328D safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

High-pressure fuel pump went out leaving wife stranded while struggling to get to the side of road. Bmw knows about the fuel pressure failure never contacted us about it. They have a 25 year safety recall the car is a 2014 but it was built in 2013 but sold as a 2014 so theyâre wiggling out of the recall fix I donât even have 100,000 miles on the car
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328D. The contact stated that while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle lost power and started chugging. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the residence and parked. However, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to diagnose the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed with high-pressure fuel pump failure. The contact was informed that the entire fuel system needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,658.
Diesel fuel pump failed while driving on the road. I also own a 2014 328d BMW which was recalled earlier where the diesel fuel pump was replaced by the dealership. While driving on the road, the car unexpectedly turned off in traffic. I managed to get the vehicle off the road and called a tow truck. I contacted my local BMW dealer and informed me my 2017 328d is not under a recall like my 2014 328d was. I then instructed the tow truck driver to take the car to an independent mechanic who specializes on BMWs. The diagnosis is a fail fuel pump.
Engine seized on freeway. Car has 99,000 miles. Dealership says engine seized and has to be replaced at a higher cost than the car is worth. Unknown warning lights.
While driving down the road my car gave me a notification âDRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTIONâ said full engine output not available then it just stopped and shut off (limp mode) it has done this multiple times and the shop says that it may be the High Pressure Fuel Pump. This has happened on a busy city road with high traffic and curvy roads where my car would not move and people could not see me when coming over the hill until last minute narrowly missing my car. Luckily there wasnât oncoming traffic. I had to switch ignition off and on (it then said âtransmission not in parkâ) when it was in park. Finally started back after having to shut ignition off and on twice. Then anytime I got above…
In 2021, my vehicle had the high-pressure fuel pump replaced by an authorized BMW dealership under Safety Recall 21V-586 (BMW SIB 13 01 21). At the time of the recall, my vehicle had approximately 43,000 miles, and I was not experiencing any fuel system or drivability issues. The high-pressure fuel pump was replaced solely because BMW determined the original component posed a safety risk. My vehicle now has approximately 128,000 miles. The replacement high-pressure fuel pump installed as part of the recall has failed. Two independent repair facilities have diagnosed the high-pressure fuel pump as the cause of the no-start/fuel delivery issue. When I took the vehicle to a BMW dealership, I wa…
1.) The Bosch CP4 High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP), OEM part number 13517824477 / 0445010517, failed catastrophically. This is the factory-installed pump on the 2014 BMW 328d equipped with the N47 diesel engine. Upon failure, the pump's internal cam and roller assembly disintegrated, releasing metal shavings throughout the entire fuel system â contaminating the fuel lines, injectors, fuel rail, and fuel tank. The vehicle will not start. The failed pump and contaminated fuel system components are available for inspection upon request. 2.) The vehicle experienced a sudden, complete loss of motive power with no prior warning, rendering it unable to start or operate. This type of failure â as…
The fuel system has failed. The car shut off in the Baltimore harbor tunnel twice completely stopping traffic and creating a very hazard situation. One of those two times the semi truck behind me had to slam its brakes. When the car shuts off you must come to a complete stop and turn the car completely off. After restarting the car is in limp mode with reduced power. The incident has happened about 6 other times. Every time it happens I have feared my safety, especially if there is no shoulder to coast the car in to park. Independent service center has replaced three sensors related to fuel pressure system which did not fix. The vehicle and component has not been inspected by manufacture,…
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20
Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2013–2018, owners most often name: engine, fuel/propulsion system, fuel system, diesel. 212 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
