What Volkswagen ID.4 owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Volkswagen ID.4 safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

A center brake light module burned up, contaminating the passenger compartment with toxic fumes and making the vehicle undriveable. The fumes caused burning throat, headache, and nausea with potential worse long-term health implications. Volkswagen replaced the faulty unit but has refused to mitigate the toxic fumes or replace the vehicle under warranty. A web search indicated this isn't an isolated problem with at least this vehicle model and year.
Incident Summary & Vehicle Behavior: I am filing this safety defect report regarding a critical sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) incident in my 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 that resulted in a crash. On September 20, 2026, after parking and preparing to get out of the vehicle, the vehicle by itself accelerated without accelerator pedal input. It ran over the concrete barrier below front axle, continued forward and hit Handicap Parking sign post. On previous occasions also the vehicle randomly experienced erratic power surges after parking. Also, previously occasionally on shifting from Park to Reverse, the vehicle independently surged backwards without accelerator pedal input. Potential Def…
The front windshield wiper system intermittently malfunctions on both the driver and passenger sides. During operation, either wiper blade can fold or roll over on itself instead of remaining properly positioned against the windshield. The vehicle and wiper system are currently available for inspection upon request. This creates a safety concern because the malfunction can reduce the effectiveness of the windshield wipers during rain and impair forward visibility. I initially believed the problem was caused by the wiper blades. I replaced the existing blades with new Bosch OE-style replacement blades, including a Bosch 28AOE on the driver side. The new blades generally operated normally, b…
The SOS/ GPS system in my car failed a few days after the warranty expired. So my car no longer knows where it is and if I press the SOS (Emergency Call) button (or if it was automatically triggered after an accident), it does not work and it does not summon help. I asked VW to cover all or part of the cost as "goodwill" for an important safety system and they refused. Failure of the SOS system (either the battery or the communication module) is a known common failure on VWs and on the ID.4 in particular. VW should recall these vehicles so that this important safety system works.
Recall 93EA / NHTSA campaign 26V030000 (high-voltage battery). I am the owner of a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 subject to safety recall 93EA (high-voltage battery). I live on the [XXX], and bought the car on this island from Pre-Owned Motor Cars. There is no authorized Volkswagen recall-service facility on the island; VW directs me to a dealer on [XXX], requiring inter-island ocean shipment of the vehicle. Since XXX, I have pursued the no-charge recall remedy through VW Customer Care, and since XXX I have an official case.number On XXX VW verbally refused any loaner vehicle and refused to escalate my call to a supervisor. On XXX, VW confirmed its position in writing : reimbursement of only 25% of …
For approximately the past month, the steering-wheel controls for the vehicleâs Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) have intermittently become completely unresponsive while driving. When the vehicle is first started, the buttons work normally and can be used to activate ACC, adjust the set speed, and change the following distance. However, after several minutes of driving, the steering-wheel ACC controls suddenly stop responding. When this occurs, the driver is unable to reduce the ACC set speed or increase the following distance using the steering-wheel controls. This creates a potentially dangerous situation because the vehicle may continue traveling at a speed or following distance that is n…
Shortly after purchasing my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, the vehicle developed a failure involving the telematics/Car-Net system. The vehicle could not connect properly to Volkswagen ID/Car-Net services, the built-in GPS location was significantly inaccurate, and the SOS/emergency-call function was unavailable/deactivated. Volkswagen diagnosed the telematics/Car-Net control module as failed and replaced the module. After replacement, the SOS/emergency-call system, GPS, and connected services returned to normal operation. I am filing this complaint because the failed module affected the vehicleâs emergency-call capability, not just convenience features. If the SOS system is unavailable during or a…
I have experienced this situation two times this past week in a parking lot. I pulled out of a space and was only going 2 to 3 miles an hour and the car lunged forward quickly and then stopped. Luckily nothing was in front of me.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
On May 16, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Recall Query (RQ) RQ24010 to investigate the remedy and scope of recalls 23V-213 and 23V-312. The affected vehicles by these recalls included model years (MY) 2021 through 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles. ODI received reports of the vehicleâs doors opening while the vehicle was in motion post recall remedy. ODI, also, received similar allegations on vehicles that were outside the scope of the recalls. Volkswagen issued recall 2
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-spe

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2021–2026, owners most often name: electrical system, unknown or other, forward collision avoidance. 1,005 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
