What Volkswagen GTI owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Volkswagen GTI safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

On 8/23/2026, my vehicle experienced severe vibrations and unusual noise after load crack sound while driving. We discovered that the factory motor mount (metal arm) was completely Brocken off (picture in attachment) and required immediate replacement to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle. Also bolt thread in the engine support was damaged.
While driving, the vehicle developed uneven acceleration and an audible metallic rattling/buzzing sound. Shortly after, the engine locked up, stalled, and jerked the car to a stop while in traffic. A Volkswagen dealership has confirmed the engine failed and locked up, at 26,127 miles, but could not yet identify the specific internal components which failed. They indicated the engine cannot be turned over and the oil is full of metallic flakes. This created substantial danger to myself and others as the vehicle suddenly died in traffic, not only losing power, but suddenly jerking to a stop. Fortunately I was slowing down and not in an intersection, or on a highway or crossing train tracks. …
I own a vehicle built from two salvage vehicles: a 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen (VIN [XXX] - the body) and a 2019 VW GTI (VIN [XXX] - the engine, suspension, fuel tank/system, etc). The vehicle is registered and titled under the Sportwagen VIN. Safety Recall 20UF requires replacement of the suction jet pump to prevent risk of fire. The recall was performed on the Sportwagen prior to its crash, but not on the GTI. Since the Sportwagen no longer has it's original engine/fuel tank, but that from the GTI, this means my vehicle has the defective, unsafe part. Because the dealer service department goes by the registered body VIN, they refused to perform the recall. I called VWoA Customer Care, who…
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Component: The MIB3 Infotainment Head Unit (specifically the internal eMMC memory chip) and the motorized rearview camera trunk emblem assembly.Inspection: Yes, the vehicle and all malfunctioning components are fully available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?Risk: The backup camera screen completely freezes or goes black when reversing, causing a total loss of rear visibility that violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 and creates an immediate pedestrian strike hazard. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a deale…
Fuel pump and thermostat failure. Known issue on 2017 GTI models and VW corporate will not grant an exception for the class action settlement since vehicle is outside of coverage period. All scheduled maintenance on vehicle has been done at a dealership and i have had no issues. Spoke with VW Corporate and they will not grant an exception or allow me to speak to anyone else after requesting an escalation request to a supervisor. They also said filing a complaint will not do anything since the outcome will not change.
On June 24, 2026, Safety Recall 20UF (Suction Jet Pump) was completed by an authorized Volkswagen dealer. Upon leaving the dealership, the vehicle immediately experienced a severe engine stall and extended no-start condition. During the recall service, liquid fuel flooded the EVAP lines and charcoal canister, saturating the intake with raw fuel. This caused an immediate safety hazard, stalling the vehicle in active traffic in 110+ degree summer heat. The vehicle was brought back to the dealer, who confirmed the stall but incorrectly blamed a fuel injector, refusing to acknowledge the EVAP flooding caused by the recall work. Due to the no-start condition, the vehicle was flatbed towed. Raw fu…
On July 16, 2026, a remote Over-the-Air (OTA) software update was initiated by Volkswagen. Prior to this update, the infotainment system functioned correctly (backup camera and other safety features are displayed on this screen. Immediately following the installation, the system module failed, rendering it unusable and multiple safety features negated by this failure. Although the vehicle is outside the standard factory warranty period, this failure is a direct result of a manufacturer-instigated remote software transmission rather than standard wear and tear. Furthermore, because this failure has disabled the backup camera, the vehicle is no longer compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Saf…
Travel assist, the VW system that controls Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning, is repeatedly and randomly failing on the 2022 VW GTI. This is a well-known defect readily documented on the internet, due to a faulty capacitive sensor mat inside the steering wheel. This intermittent failure is clearly safety related and should be subject to a recall and repair at the manufacturer's expense. Itis not.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.

On December 12, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ23-007 to investigate the remedy repair effectiveness and scope of Volkswagen (VW) recall 16V-647. Recall 16V-647 was issued on September 2, 2016, for a defective suction jet pump (SJP) inside the fuel tank. Failure of the SJP could lead to a fuel leak from the vehicle. This recall covered certain model year (MY) 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 passenger car vehicles. The recall remedy repair replaced SJP Version 1.0
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has completed its review of a defect petition received on 14 August 2019 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect of the manual transmissions in Model Year (MY) 2019 Volkswagen (VW) GTI, Golf GTI and Jetta GLI vehicles. The stalling incidents cited occurred without warning as the vehicle slows to a stop or prepares to make a turn across traffic with the clutch pressed in and the vehicle in neutral. The hazard posed by a vehicle stalling event is m

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010–2026, owners most often name: engine, power train, unknown or other. 677 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
