What Volkswagen Golf R owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Volkswagen Golf R safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

The vehicle systems named most often in Volkswagen Golf R complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
The contact owns a 2026 Volkswagen Golf R. The contact stated that while reversing, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The parking brake engaged with an audible alert. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who changed the vehicle settings, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 900.
Numerous engine fault errors. After Kuhn VW replaced the defective caliper, they failed to secure it properly. The caliper cover which is the integral part of the braking system (serving cooling and air-dynamic function, preventing debris) fell off and got lodged in between the wheel and the caliper. The car started shuddering. Kuhn WV refuses to replace the caliper (the cover is not a separate component but the assembly) stating that: discovered customer caliper missing. but vehicle is working as designed. cover has no negative reaction towards vehicle operation. Wolkswagen is aware of caliper cover is missing and warranty does not cover caliper replacement and vehicke still works as desig…
Vehicle consistently misfires after fueling. Sometimes the pump shuts off early before filling the tank adding 5-9 gallons when I should expect 12. VW claims it is bad fuel but to get bat fuel at multiple gas stations over the course of a year is unlikely. I believe it is related to the suction jet pump that VW was forced to recall on various models but dealerships will not inspect this part. It has been in for diagnosis 7 times since the first cel was triggered in May of 2025.
Emergency braking system has applied itself on four different occasions where nothing was in front of me and one time was it highway speeds doing 70 mph The brakes completely locked up on the highway making people behind me have to take evasive action and not hit me while I'm stopped on the highway with my car parked and the emergency brake on The other time it happened just rolling through an intersection nobody in front of me just locked them up at about 45 mph The other two times were fairly minor I was doing 30 miles an hour through an intersection and it locked up my brakes nobody in front of me no nothing I could see and I didn't hit anything at any given moment
While turning (right hand turn) slowly into parking space, vehicle engine unexpectedly reved and accelerated causing vehicle to jump curb and strike fixed object (tree). Foot was not/not on the accelerator but rather on brake yet acceleration was so rapid vehicle could not be stopped prior to striking curb and fixed object. Filing HHTSA report due to research indicating similar incidents of unanticipated rapid acceleration at slow speeds for VW Golf models.
3 occasions, the car went into emergency brake mode. once on hiway at 70mph warning came up and told me to grab the wheel and take control and prepare for impact. Nothing was in front of me to trigger this scenario. On hiway I was nearly rear ended but driver slid around me and didn't hit. This could have been a serious accident or death. The other two times it was at 45 mph and locked them up for no reason. Third was in a parking lot at 5 mph and it locked em up impending traffic and upsetting people.i have sent the dealer ship, where I purchased the vehicle in last two weeks and nothing has responded.
The Hill Hold Assist system on my 2024 Volkswagen GTI (manual transmission) repeatedly holds the brakes too long when starting on an incline. The brakes remain engaged for 1â2 seconds even after I begin releasing the clutch and applying throttle, which causes the car to stall or hesitate before moving. This creates a safety risk when pulling into traffic or when other vehicles are behind me on a hill. This issue has occurred at least four times within the first 1,000 miles of driving. It is easily reproducible on normal hills and happens under normal driving conditions. I have many years of experience driving manual transmission vehicles, including a 2019 GTI, and I have never experienced …
On 04/24, I purchased 4 P235/40ZR18 Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires from Tire Rack. The tires have approx 15000 miles on them. I discovered the tires started to show approx 1/2 in cracks all around the tire where the tread transitions to the sidewall. This appears to be a safety issue because if the cracks worsen, the tread may separate from the tire. I have also spoken to Tire Rack were I`ll be filing a complaint.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
On December 12, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ23-007 to investigate the remedy repair effectiveness and scope of Volkswagen (VW) recall 16V-647. Recall 16V-647 was issued on September 2, 2016, for a defective suction jet pump (SJP) inside the fuel tank. Failure of the SJP could lead to a fuel leak from the vehicle. This recall covered certain model year (MY) 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 passenger car vehicles. The recall remedy repair replaced SJP Version 1.0

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2012–2026, owners most often name: forward collision avoidance, electrical system, service brakes. 80 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
