What Mini JCW owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Mini JCW safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

The vehicle systems named most often in Mini JCW complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
The vehicle onboard screen is very slow to connect to our Android phones. This has been an issue from the very beginning. A drivetrain fault message appeared on 04/01 (NOT a joke!!) and the car was not responsive to going in reverse gear. The transmission stopped responding and we were barely able to make it to the dealership. The car wouldn't go past 40mph. We've had the car since mid-December and it only has a little over 1200 miles.
A little scary, it just got released from my hospital. From having cancer just wanna have my recalls repaired
This car has the Steptronic automatic transmission. There is a mechanical actuator that moves when the transmission is placed in Park. Apparently an electronic circuit is completed telling the computer the car is in Park. There is a small spring on the actuator arm that moves it. If that spring breaks the arm does not move and the computer does not "sense" Park. A warning light and alarm go off "Secure vehicle from rolling". My online research indicated this is a fairly high failure item it both MINIs and BMWs. From the pictures I've seen of the actuator arm and spring this appears to be a very poor design. The repair runs anywhere from $2000 to $4000 depending on the dealer repair shop. I …
REAR DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT HOUSING MELTED. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN TAIL LIGHT OUT INDICATOR TURNED ON.
THE MINI COOPER DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THE OIL SUPPLY LINE TO THE TURBO IS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS FOUND DURING A ROUTINE INSPECTION AT THE DEALERSHIP.
APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES AFTER PARKING MY VEHICLE, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. A QUICK GOOLE SEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A KNOWN FAILURE IN THE WATER PUMP OF THE TURBO COOLER - THE ELECTRIC AUXILIARY WATER PUMP THAT COOLS THE TURBOCHARGER HAS AN ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT BOARD THAT CAN MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT. HOWEVER, MY VEHICLE WAS NEVER RECALLED, AND MINI NEVER SENT OUT ANY NOTICE THAT THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY.
VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. A FIRE EXTINGUISHER PUT IT OUT BUT I COULD SEE DAMAGED PARTS. I DROVE THE CAR TO FLOW MINI IN RALEIGH AND DROPPED IT OFF FOR REPAIRS. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE AUXILLERY WATER PUMP HAD SHORTED OUT THEN OVER HEATED AND CAUGHT ON FIRE. I GOOGLED MY VEHICLE NUMBER AND SAW RECALLS FOR CERTAIN MINIS. MINE FALLS INTO THE CATEGORY AND WAS NEVER CONTACTED ABOUT THIS BEING A FIRE HAZARD. WIFE WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR ANY MORE.
OUR 2016 MINI COOPER JCW WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, WHERE IT FAILED TO STOP, AND, IN FACT SEEMED TO ACCELERATE. A PREVIOUS VERSION WE OWNED DID THE SAME THING, SEVERAL YEARS AGO. A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS ACCIDENT, AN ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE NATIONAL MEDIA, DESCRIBING A SIMILAR ACCIDENT IN NEW YORK. IN THAT INSTANCE, THE CAR STRUCK WAS BEING DRIVEN BY THE ACTOR [XXX] , WHICH WAS WHY IT RECEIVED SO MUCH NATIONAL ATTENTION. OUR VEHICLE SUFFERED $7000 IN DAMAGE. NO AIR BAG DEPLOYED, AND IT WAS MOVING AT LESS THAN 5 MILES AN HOUR. WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE INCIDENTS OF FEET GETTING CAUGHT IN THE PEDALS (WE HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION). HAVING HAD TWO SIMILAR ACCIDENTS, I HAVE CONCLUDED THERE IS EITHER …

Some model year (MY) 2023/2024 MINI vehicles may be equipped with a Body Domain Controller (BDC)that needs to be replaced. This is not a safety, emissions, or any other performance issue.
MINI electrical systems have continued to develop over the past few years. As a result, the demand on the batteries has increased. Breakdowns due to an empty battery or problems in the vehicles electrical system can have various causes, most of which are not due to the battery itself. For this reason, a battery replacement will permanently eliminate the problem only in the rarest of cases. The energy diagnosis test module helps to localize these causes. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle âÃÂÃÂdischarged batteryâÃÂàcomplaints. Withou
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
In a January 10, 2012 letter to NHTSA, BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the electric auxiliary water pump in approximately 88,911 model year (MY) 2007-2011 Mini Cooper vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2006 through January 18, 2011 (Recall 12V-008).According to BMW, the auxiliary water pump on vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder turbocharged engines may overheat. Electro-migration can cause the pump electronic circuit board t

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010–2026, owners most often name: engine, electrical system, exterior lighting. 9 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
