Complaints by model year
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

Technical service bulletins (TSBs)
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.
- TSIB 26-07
This bulletin is to provide instructions for clearing DTC 1067 FMI 7 (Pressure Sensor Not Calibrated) and FMI 11 (Primary and Secondary Circuit Pressure Sensor (PS1/PS2) Plausibility Error - BS Pressure), when required to prevent the loss of Adaptive Cruise Control functionality and the illumination of a warning indicator.
- TSIB 26-05
This bulletin introduces an optional product improvement to the A/C compressor drive system for coaches equipped with a Cummins X12. The improved pulley system is available for customers who wish to reduce noise and vibration characteristics and may be installed at the customerâs discretion.
- TSIB 26-01
This TSIB provides information to provide a software update. Some coaches using MCC HVAC Eco-Tempo ECU # 07-10-009 software T35-1581 / V1.04 may be experiencing random fault codes due to MCC software errors.
- TSIB 26-06
Instructions for LV Battery Replacement Procedure (Vanner Equipped coaches)
- ITS61080
Instructions to remove DEF sensor bypass calibration from engine ECM and new sensor installation AR - 18inch DEF tank CA emissions
- TSIB 26-04
This TSIB is to inform customers the recommended steering axle cleaning/greasing instructions to prevent damage on axle components due to displacement of grease from the bearings, lubrication reduction and accelerate wear for coaches with independent front suspension.
- TSIB 25-08
MCI noticed that some customers operating in severe duty environments were experiencing the exterior U-Joints of the lower steering shaft binding due to corrosion. Because of this, MCI has developed a new re-greaseable U-Joint service kit (NF PN: 6505981) to replace the existing greased for life U-Joint on lower steering shafts. Rework instruction and preventive maintenance guide are provided below. Following this procedure and preventive maintenance will increase the life of MCI lower steering shafts.
- TSIB 25-05
This TSIB is to remind MCI coach operators that when servicing the HVAC belts, idler pulleys or the lower mount of the idler pulley bracket, ensure that the lower mount is adjusted so it is not contacting the bumper support beam nor the bumper itself.
- TSIB 24-03
Information to owners showing the proper procedure for checking the oil level in a BITZER HVAC compressor.
- ITS69867
Instruction to Service to replace the farebox baseplate to provide additional clearance.
- ITS60814
Instructions to change the refrigerant compressor pulley from a single groove to a double groove to improve belt life.
- ITS60809
Instructions to change the refrigerant compressor pulley from a single groove to a double groove to improve belt life.
Federal defect investigations
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
- Exhaust Bellows Pipe Fracture Recall
By letter dated April 15, 2013, Motor Coach Industries (MCI) notified the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) of a safety defect that may exist in certain model year (MY) 2012 and 2013 MCI D-model coaches built from December 22, 2011 to May 19, 2012 equipped with the Cummins 2010 EPA ISX 12 Liter engine. These vehicles may have had an incorrect installation of the exhaust pipe. If installed incorrectly, the elbow pipe may prematurely fail and if a Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration event occ
- MCI Drive Shaft Safety Loop Failures
In the fall of 2011, network contacts made ODI aware of four (4) incidents of drive shaft failure on the subject buses involving a loss of vehicle control. Two of the incidents were relatively low speed non-crash events; and two resulted in motor coach rollovers. All four events showed signs of a common failure mode. The incidents and crashes studied during this investigation all resulted from a series of complex events that began with the the yoke journal ears on the drive shafts fracturing. Once t
- MCI Driveshaft Safety Loop Failures
ODI has identified certain MCI coaches with powertrain configurations that may allow a driveshaft separated at the rearward universal joint to escape the guardian structure of the steerable tag axle and damage steering and braking components. The damaged components may increase the risk of a loss of vehicle control. The subject coaches include 806 model year 1992 through 2012 MCI D and E series motor coaches with steerable tag axles. This Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering

Questions
What are the most common Mci D4500 problems?
0 owner complaints are on record with NHTSA.
Is a complaint or a TSB the same as a recall?
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
How do I report a problem with my Mci D4500?
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
