What Jeep Cherokee owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Jeep Cherokee safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

Lost ability to drive almost causing an accident. Vehicle had to be towed to a mechanic. Cause of problem was a failed PTU. Had the vehicle repaired, PTU replacement, at a cost of $2,017.18
To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint regarding a catastrophic Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure on my Jeep Trailhawk that has rendered my vehicle undrivable and raised serious safety concerns. While driving, my vehicle experienced a sudden PTU failure that resulted in a loss of safe vehicle operation. The failure was severe enough that the vehicle could not be driven and had to be towed to an authorized Jeep dealership for diagnosis and repair. The dealership has confirmed that the PTU has failed; however, there is currently no available repair solution or replacement part to permanently correct the issue. As a result, my vehicle remains out of service indefinitely. In …
I was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, I took my foot off the brake and pressed the accelerator. bI heard a loud cracking/crushing noise coming from underneath the vehicle. When I tried to accelerate, the Jeep would not shift properly into gear. The engine revved, but the vehicle did not accelerate normally / did not move as it should. The Jeep was essentially no longer able to transmit power normally, so I stopped driving it. The important sequence is: red light-green light-released brake-pressed accelerator-loud cracking/crushing noise underneath-Jeep wouldn't properly engage/shift- engine revved- vehicle accelerated normally.
Driving after work on 53S my jeep decided to only go 5mph engine light turned on among other light. Svc 4wd. Had to pull over the interstate shoulder thatâs under construction and had very small space to park without getting hit by others.
The component involved is the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) / four-wheel-drive system on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. The vehicle has experienced four PTU-related failures. The most recent replacement was a brand-new genuine Mopar PTU professionally installed in October 2025. The vehicle and repair records are available for inspection upon request. The failures created a safety concern because the PTU is part of the drivetrain and four-wheel-drive system, and the repeated failures left the vehicle unreliable and at times undrivable. The vehicle required towing and could not be safely relied upon for normal operation. I am concerned that another PTU failure could result in loss of drivetrain…
The PTU - received message on dash SVC 4WD - lose of power - grinding noises when speedometer reached 35mph Took to the dealer they confirmed the PTU needed to be replaced immediately but because of demand of this part with other recalls it was back-ordered for at least a month. The SVC 4WD message came on one other time about two years ago but immediately disappeared. Costs out of pocket total $4149.57 for repairs and at this point $2200 in rental car fees
PTU failure which has been confirmed by Jeep Dealership. Stellantis is actively withholding out-of-pocket reimbursements for an acknowledged safety risk because they have failed to release a timely remedy. Issue was identified due to a leak/metal shavings from the PTU
would like to add to the growing list of frustrated Jeep Cherokee owners requiring an expensive repair for known PTU issues. The "Service 4WD" check light came on 1 year ago (checked by service department 12/2025), finally diagnosed in August 2026 as a failed PTU, with back ordered repair due to rising number of this specific repair/part. There was a recall done on 2015-2019 Jeep Cherokees for this very same issue. Why this safety recall hasn't been extended to post -2019 Jeep Cherokee versions is confusing.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-009 after having received 80 complaints on model years 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokees alleging the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) inadvertently activated while the vehicle was in motion.During this investigation, the subject vehicles were updated to include only Model Years (MY) 2014-2016, while MY 2017-2020 were considered peers.Based on related repair invoices, ODI believed the EPB module was damaged by water leaking into the vehicl

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2014–2027, owners most often name: power train, engine, electrical system. 10,045 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
