The vehicle uses hydrogen fuel which is stored in three high pressure cylinders. Any fires or damage to the vehicle that affects the fuel system can result in an explosion. During a recent recall, customers were recommended not to park near structures because the car can explode and cause property damage. This is applicable to all hydrogen fuel cell vehicles available in the US.
Hyundai sells Nexo Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles with known Fuel Cell stack issues, leading to severe safety issues from sudden power loss when driving, especially when overtaking and driving on highways and/or uphill. The power loss issue was diagnosed to originate from a fuel-cell stack failure, one of the Nexoâs main power-train components. This is a known power-train issue to Hyundai, debated online since 2021 by consumers experiencing the same power loss, across various Hyundai web-logs. Other affected consumers filed a class action lawsuit this year against Hyundai Motor America Inc, for the same and other reasons. The lawsuit accuses Hyundai of selling Nexo vehicles equipped with defe…

Thermally Activated Pressure Relief Device (TPRD) - Fire Concern
A THERMALLY-ACTIVATED PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICE (TPRD) THAT VENTS HYDROGEN GAS TO THE ATMOSPHERE TO PREVENT OVER-PRESSURIZATION OF THE HYDROGEN FUEL TANK IN THE EVENT OF OVERHEATING IN THE LOCAL AREA AROUND THE HYDROGEN FUEL TANKS. THE TPRD IS DESIGNED TO VENTTHROUGH A GLASS BULB-TYPE RELEASE MECHANISM THAT FRACTURES WHEN A SPECIFICOPERTAING TEMPERATURE IS REACHED. THE GLASS BULB-TYPE MECHANISM IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES COULD PREMATURELY FRACTURE DUE TO MICROCRACKS IN THE GLASS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO INADVERTENT DISCHARGE OF HYDROGEN GAS DURING NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. HYDROGEN GAS LEAKING IN CONFINED AREAS WITH THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SURCE MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A VEHICLE FIRE WHIEL PARKED…
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driverâs-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle

This bulletin is a reminder to exercise caution when painting the Nexo, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). During the painting processes, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) may enter the fuel cell through openings or micro gaps in the intake or exhaust piping for the fuel cell. VOCs may damage certain components in the fuel cell causing reduced fuel-cell performance. VOC chemicals can harm the fuel cell system's performance. Precaution must be taken to seal openings for the fuel cell system before painting or placing Nexo in a curing oven.
This bulletin provides a procedure to maintain the transmission in NEUTRAL such as pushing the vehicle without starting the fuel stack or when repairs require the transmission to be continuously maintained in NEUTRAL.
This bulletin contains information about the proper removal of the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all models. If the protective cover is not removed correctly, there is a possibility of the rubber insert and rail spring becoming partially separated on the inner side of the wiper blade, which could lead to poor wiping performance and/or possible scratching of the windshield glass. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to properly remove the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all new wiper blades.
This bulletin provides important checkpoint guidelines when performing engine oil and filter change services.
This bulletin provides information on how to properly vent Hydrogen from a Nexo FCEV for maintenance or repairs.
Some NEXO (FE) vehicles may exhibit charging interruptions during hydrogen charging due to sensitive leak detection logic diagnostic conditions. This bulletin outlines the procedure to update the HMU controller software and replace the PRV (Pressure Relief Valve).
Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2019–2026, owners most often name: fuel/propulsion system, engine, unknown or other. 22 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
