What Honda Civic owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Honda Civic safety recalls or check your VIN.
Complaints owners filed with NHTSA, by the model year of the vehicle. A high count can also mean a popular year, so compare it with how many were sold.

The vehicle systems named most often in Honda Civic complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
Steering wheel feels jerky at high speeds. There is a clicking noise and the steering wheel jerks slightly assess when I turn a hard right.
Steering rack malfunction which is a major safety issue. It was said to be only in 2022-2025 civics but it is very clear this is happening in the 2020s as well
While stopped at a stoplight, the rear windshield shattered for no apparent reason.
Happened multiple times in multiple locations during city driving accelerating from a stop or low speed to a higher speed, especially when accelerating from a stop through an intersection at a stoplight. Vehicle surges and âwonât goâ. Feels like a giant rubber band in the drive train stretching and recoiling. Eventually after about a half dozen âsurgesâ the vehicle attains enough speed and the problem goes away. Only happens when accelerating from a stop or low speed to a higher speed.
Sticky steering. More effort required to move steering wheel. Ongoing.
Car steering gets stuck/jerks and cannot stay straight, wheels jerk aggressively from left to right in speeds up to 50 on the highway during rain.
2 Issues. 1) Only a few weeks after purchase there were defective stabilizer link bushings. They removed them and gave the car back to me while they waited for the part to come in. This part did not come in for several months maybe even a year so I was driving with defective suspension that entire time. The part came in and the vehicle was fixed. That was the first safety issue. 2) A brake light came on stating performance issues and I needed to take it to the dealer. I found out there is a bulletin about this problem and Honda is investigating. This problem effects the brakes so that's a very serious safety issue. The vehicle isn't even 4 years old and the problem started about 3…
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2011 Honda Civic. It was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of the purchase, the vehicle was listed with a mileage of 142,000; however, it was discovered via a Carfax Report and Certificate of Tile of the vehicle that the mileage was 227,100.
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20
On November 29, 2023, the Oï¬ce of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering eï¬ort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering eï¬ort (described as âsticky steeringâ) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving
On March 17, 2023, The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE23-005) to access the alleged defect of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022 and 2023 Honda Civic vehicles. The complaints report that the momentary increase in steering effort (described as "sticky steering") occurs mostly at highway speeds after driving for a certain amount of time. The reports have been received over the past 2 years with most occurring with low vehicle mile
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-spe
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Ele

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010–2027, owners most often name: steering, unknown or other, electrical system. 6,914 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
