Emissions System Caught Fire Upon returning from a 40 minute, local motorcycle ride my 2015 Ducati 1199R started to smoke and then caught fire as I was riding it down my driveway. I saw the small orange flames and turned the bike off; fortunately a garden hose was nearby. After removing the exhaust system mufflers (includes cat), I observed that the operating cable (and associated black thermal insulation) for the exhaust system flapper valve had ignited and burned.
I BOUGHT THIS MOTORCYCLE NEW. IT HAS 1567 MILES ON IT. NEVER DRIVEN HARD OR RACED. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE MOTORCYCLE WILL NOT GO AND/OR STAY IN NEUTRAL GEAR. IF I GENTLY TAP THE SHIFT LEVER DOWN IN SAY'S GEAR 1 ON THE DASH WHEN ACTUALLY IT IS IN NEUTRAL. IF I INCREASE PRESSURE ON THE SHIFT LEVER IT WILL FULLY ENGAGE IN TO 1ST GEAR. THIS SITUATION IS NOT SAFE. I CAN NOT GET IT TO STAY IN THE GREEN LIGHT NEUTRAL POSITION. UPDATE: I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. FAULTY GEAR POSITION SWITCH SENSOR. IT COST ME $367.00 TO GET THE UNSAFE SITUATION CORRECTED. THE DEALER SAID THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I THINK THAT DUCATI SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THESE UNSAFE BIKES OR AT THE VERY LEAST FIX IT W…
GOOD DAY, I AM NOT ATTEMPTING TO BE A JERK HERE HOWEVER SOMEONE REALLY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THE DUCATI 1299S, 1299, 1199 AND OTHER DUCATIS. I JUST PURCHASED A BRAND NEW DUCATI WITH 1 MILE ON IT AND THE MOTORCYCLE CUTS OF DURING LOW SPEED TURNS AND CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS ENJURY TO SOMEONE OR REALTY. I FIGURED IT WAS JUST MY BIKE SO I WAS GOING TO TAKE IT BACK TO DUCATI DUE TO THE FACT I HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND PAID 25K FOR THIS BIKE. I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND IT'S A COMMON ISSUE DUCATI OWNERS HAVE HAD NO HELP WITH FROM SAFETY COMPANIES OR DEALERSHIPS. LIKE I SAID I'M NOT LOOKING FOR A PAY DAY OR TRYING TO BE A JERK I'M SIMPLY WRITING THIS SO I CAN S…
I WAS APPLYING THROTTLE TO PASS A VEHICLE ON A RIGHT HAND TURN AND RESUME MY LANE POSITION AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE AND MOTORCYCLE SHUT DOWN. I HAD TO SUDDENLY CORRECT MY BODY POSITION AND BRING THE MOTORCYCLE UPRIGHT WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN CROSSING THE CENTER LINE. EMERGENCY MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROADWAY WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN BEING STRUCK FROM THE REAR BY A CAR SINCE THERE WAS NO ELECTRICAL POWER AND LIMITED BRAKING ABILITY. INSPECTION ON THE ROADWAY SHOWED A WARNING SIGNAL ON THE DASH WHICH WAS A RED WITH EXCLAMATION POINT ! (ABS!). THE BIKE WOULD NOT START. HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. AFTER DIAGNOSIS AND THE MECHANIC AT THE DUCATI SHOP SAID IT WA…
THE MOTORCYCLE HAS A GEAR INDICATOR (TO TELL WHAT GEAR YOU ARE IN) THAT DISPLAYS ON THE DASHBOARD. TWO DIFFERENT GEAR INDICATION PROBLEMS: 1) WHILE TRAVELING IN 6TH GEAR, THE INDICATOR WILL FLASH BETWEEN 5TH AND 6TH GEAR 2) WHILE IN NEUTRAL GEAR, THE INDICATOR WILL FLASH BETWEEN 1ST AND NEUTRAL. THIS ONLY OCCURS WHEN THE BIKE IS HEAT SOAKED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AIR TEMPERATURES ABOVE 90 DEGREES. THE NEUTRAL / 1ST GEAR PROBLEM CAUSES THE BIKE'S (WHEN RUNNING IN NEUTRAL GEAR WITH THE SIDE STAND DOWN) ENGINE TO SHUT OFF BECAUSE THE BIKE HAS A SIDE STAND AND GEAR INTERLOCK CONDITION THAT WILL NOT LET THE ENGINE RUN WITH THE SIDE STAND IN THE DOWN POSITION IN ANY FORWARD GEAR WITH THE CLUTCH E…
I OWN A 2012 DUCATI 1199 PANIGALE. I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND IT IS JUST 3 MONTHS OUT OF ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER WARRANTY. THE MOTORCYCLE IS 100% STOCK AND HAS NOT BEEN MODIFIED. THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE FAIRING/BODY PANEL IS MELTING/BURNING DUE TO EXHAUST HEAT. THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF THESE EXACT ISSUES ON THE SAME MOTORCYCLES ( ACROSS THE COUNTRY). DUCATI ISSUED A NEWER VERSION OF LOWER RIGHT SIDE FAIRING WHICH FIXED THIS ISSUE BUT THEY HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR MOTORCYCLES ALREADY SOLD WITH DEFECTIVE PART. MY DEALER, BARNETTE SUZUKI AND DUCATI IS NOT ABLE TO REPLACE THE FAIRING WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM DUCATI USA. THIS IS A FIRE AND SAFETY ISSUE. IF I CONTINUE TO USE THE M…
MOTORCYCLE WILL NOT SHIFT DOWN FROM 3RD TO 1ST GEAR. ALSO IN A STOPPING SITUATION MOTORCYCLE IS HARD TO GET FROM 2ND TO 1ST GEAR OR TO FIND NEUTRAL. *TR
WHILE AT A STOP, MOTORCYCLE STARTS MOVING WHILE THE CLUTCH IS FULLY ENGAGED. MOTORCYCLE NEEDS TO BE SHUT OFF TO PREVENT IT FROM GOING FORWARD AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. CAN LEAD TO A FATAL ACCIDENT IF I'M STOPPED AND MOTORCYCLE STARTS RIDING FORWARD WITH THE CLUTCH ENGAGED. HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME AFTER I'VE BEEN RIDING FOR ABOUT 25 - 30 MINUTES. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. *TR

Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2012–2018, owners most often name: power train, engine, electrical system. 16 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
