The vehicle systems named most often in BMW X1 complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
The contact owns a 2014 BMW X1. The contact stated that while reversing out of the driveway, the front passenger's side control arm fractured, causing the tire to dislocate 90 degrees from the vehicle and the vehicle became unmovable. The vehicle was towed to Christian Brothers Automotive, where it was determined that the lower control arm and related parts had fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
As with other complaints, the dual clutch transmission/powertrain is faulty. The BMW dealership and BMW North America are unwilling to acknowledge the safety issue, issue a recall, or buy back. Safety issues are: â¢Delayed/hesitant response âa lag of up to several seconds between pressing the accelerator and the car actually moving, especially at low speed or when pulling out from a stop. â¢Jerky, clunky low-speed behavior â rough engagement in stop-and-go traffic or when transitioning between Park/Drive/Reverse. â¢Rollaway risk â Because the DCT uses electrohydraulic clutch actuation instead of a torque converter, some drivers say the car can roll backward (e.g., on an incline…
The contact owns a BMW X1. Wow attempting to park the vehicle inside a residential garage, the contact engaged to transmission into part by the electronic console shelf by wire controls. The ending remained Allen, and the vehicle failed to mechanical grinding noises or dashboard error messages displayed to alert the driver. Upon releasing the brake paddle, the vehicle unexpectedly creep towards under engine, power and collided with the Garage Door causing $500 in property damage and cosmetic scratches to the vehicle vehicles front bumper. The dealer has been notified of failure. The manufacturer has yet has not yet been contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 18224 mileage.
I own a 2014 BMW X1 equipped with the N20 engine. The vehicle has been producing smoke from the exhaust/tailpipe after it has been sitting, and the vehicle appears to be burning engine oil very quickly. I am concerned that the malfunction involves the turbocharger engine-oil supply/feed system. BMW has previously documented a similar condition involving N20/N26 engines in Service Information Bulletin SI B11 16 15, which includes the E84 BMW X1 and addresses smoke from the exhaust associated with engine oil leaking through the turbocharger system. I am concerned about the safety risk because the vehicle is burning oil and producing visible exhaust smoke. I am concerned that continued oil loss…
The contact owns a 2021 BMW X1. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving 10 MPH, she was involved in a head-on crash with another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The driver was transported to the hospital for level two severe trauma to the neck, head, and chest with pain. The contact stated that there was a possibility that the failure was caused by the dealer. There was an air bag system sensor malfunction at the time of the purchase. The dealer was called and provided the documentation for previous work performed, but there was none about the air bag. The contact believed that the vehicle was deemed a total loss. The approximate …
Incident occurred on 9-15-26 at approx. 1:16 PM (PST) and 6205 miles. Vehicle uncontrollably rolled/moved opposite to the selected drive gear while waiting for the clutch to engage. Had stopped on a flat paved road to allow a pedestrian to cross by, but when I released the brake pedal, the vehicle unexpectedly moved backwards immediately - despite being in drive gear. Had to slam on brakes to stop this. Fortunately, no vehicle was behind me otherwise could have collided. No warning messages, etc. prior to this incident.
I got into an accident, i was hit on the driver side and the car was pushed to hit a tree, the air bag did not deploy.
I am reporting a recurring safety warning on my 2017 BMW X1 xDrive28i. The vehicle repeatedly displays the message âSecure vehicle against rollingâ on the dashboard even though the gear selector indicates that the vehicle is in Park. A diagnostic scan with BlueDriver also recorded BMW fault code 420106 â âShift Lock Solenoid: Unlock stuck.â The warning has returned multiple times and appears to indicate a problem with the vehicleâs Park/shift-lock or parking-lock recognition system. Because this warning concerns the possibility of the vehicle rolling while parked, I consider it a potential safety issue. Until the problem is diagnosed and repaired, I have been using the electroni…
Repair instructions and other communications the manufacturer sent dealers about known issues. A TSB is not a recall, and the repair is usually free only while the car is under warranty; ask your dealer for the bulletin number.
The BCP controls several vehicle functions, including the windscreen wipers and air conditioning actuators. Low current flow may cause excessive current in parts of the BCP circuit board and damage the unit. If a fault occurs, the wipers or air flap controls may operate incorrectly or fail. A wiper failure is indicated by a yellow warning light and the âWindscreen wiper faultâ Check Control message.

Once the Telematics Module (TCB2) enters sleep mode, a BMW Data Services trigger for Remote Services(remote engine start, lock/unlock/climate conditioning) will not be able to reactivate the TCB2. Due to this issue, Remote Services will not function in the vehicle when parked and locked.
Due to an implementation error in various OBD diagnostics in the vehicle's control units, in very rare cases itmay happen that stored fault memory codes (DTCs) and the MIL (warning light) are not automaticallydeleted even though the underlying malfunction has already been rectified. This does not comply with the statutory OBD specifications.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 20
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-spe

Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation public data (complaints, manufacturer communications, investigations), model years 2010 and later. Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA.
In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2012–2026, owners most often name: unknown or other, electrical system, air bags. 848 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
