Founded by August Schendel who bought land in the area in 1891 to establish a town and a farming community, the city was originally named "Schendelville". The town's name was later changed to Needville in 1894 to honor the postmaster's son, Leonard Need. The city was incorporated in 1961 and has maintained its rural small-town character while being close to the amenities of the larger Houston metro area.
