The vehicle systems named most often in Subaru BRZ complaints (one complaint can name several).
In the owners’ own words, as filed with NHTSA. Unverified reports; NHTSA removes personal details before publishing.
Engine failure (rod knock) during commute home. Engine was found with lack of oil (3.5 qrt low) on ~15,000 miles engine block although performed routine maintenance DIY oil changes. Presumably high oil consumption on daily driving conditions
Oil went dangerously low during normal 6000 mile period ( no reading on dipstick, no warning light). Subaru has replaced the engine twice under warranty due to oil consumption, 1 pint in 1200 miles. Issue started around 20k miles, engine replaced at 30k and 39k miles.
Hello, My name is [XXX] and I have a Subaru BRZ 2013 which harbors a valve spring recall (NHTSA Campaign ID 18V-772, Subaru Recall WTY-84). In seeking help to repair this, I had a customer experience that can be viewed as neglectful, deceitful and malicious in nature. Dealership Recall Refusals I called into two different dealerships to get this recall taken care of under the policies and procedures set forth by the NHTSA and at Subaruâs direction (notice). One dealership, Lancaster County Motors Subaru of Lancaster, immediately declined the recall and Subaru Advocacy suggested I take it elsewhere, violating several safety mandates and franchise agreements set forth by Subaru. Stock fuel lines on the driver side of vehicle are having rubbing/clearance issues with the hood and are causing engine fires for the 2022+ Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 model vehicles.
Engine started knocking, within 4 miles engine seized up will not run, only 78,000 miles on the car, original owners, maintained meticulously
The stock head unit (Model #: CA645UL) in my vehicle has been having Bluetooth issues. Every since I purchased the vehicle in 2016, from time to time, the audio from my Bluetooth would cut out and then come back on. It was only once in a blue moon ever since I bought the car, so I never paid much attention to it. However, recently it's been cutting out more frequently than usual. When I took my vehicle in for the 60,000 mile service on 12/12/24, I decided to mention this audio problem to see if the service center could address it while they are working on it. The technician attempted to update the software for the audio unit. After attempting the software update a few times, the technician f…
I am not writing because of a vehicle failure. I'm contacting you because my daughter purchased this vehicle for my grandson, and we find the vehicle did not come with a spare tire. I called Subaru and told them I would like to purchase a spare and a wheel. I was informed by the dealership, and directly from Subaru, that they don't make a spare tire for the vehicle. They advised that Subaru found that the fuel economy was being sacrificed due to the weight of the tire, so they decide not to make one to fit this model. I know this is not the normal issue you deal with, but not having a spare tire or an option to purchase one, I believe is a huge safety issue. I have no other documentation. T…
I was driving the car on the Highway & the car caught on fire from the engine bay area. I drover the car for about 5 miles before the fire. the car has no modification & everything in OEM/Stock condition. Many people reported having the same issue with engine catching on fire for Subaru BRZ Toyota 86 & Toyota FRS since they all share the same engine & mechanical component

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2013–2026, owners most often name: engine, unknown or other, fuel/propulsion system. 101 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
