What Mitsubishi Outlander owners have reported to NHTSA, the service bulletins the manufacturer sent dealers, and any federal defect investigations, by model year. See Mitsubishi Outlander safety recalls or check your VIN.

The front subframe crossmember on my vehicle is severely rusted out. There is currently a hole measuring about 2"x1". I previously had two other holes on the bottom welded as a temporary fix, but the rust just kept eating through the metal and it's now beyond saving. Because of this structural damage, the car is unsafe to drive and cannot pass a NYS safety inspection. I know Mitsubishi recalled earlier Outlanders for this exact crossmember rust issue, but later model years like mine seem to share the same defect and are currently excluded. There were no warning lights on the dashâI only found out how bad the failure was during an underbody inspection. It also looks like the AC condensate …
The contact owns a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated that there was a strong odor of gasoline odor inside the cabin, causing the driver and passengers to experience nausea, and the windows needed to be opened while driving the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and occurred after refueling the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone and informed the contact that the issue was unknown. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that an unknown fuel system part needed to be replaced and that a recall associated with the failure would soon be issued. The dealer later contacted the vehicle owner and offered to…
I own a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Mitsubishi's records show that Safety Recall C2204R/SR-22-004 was previously completed on my vehicle. This recall addressed improper CVT-ECU software programming that could cause an incorrect CVT gear-ratio command and potentially result in engine over-rev, engine damage, stalling, and an increased risk of a crash. My vehicle experiences serious and concerning problems following sustained driving at highway speeds. The vehicle begins to sputter and does not operate normally. Multiple dashboard warning lights begin flashing, and the backup camera activates and displays on the screen even though the vehicle is actively traveling forward and has not bee…
The hood on my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has visibly fluttered, shaken and bounced while driving since I purchased the vehicle used on March 15, 2024, with approximately 80,000 miles. This has been an ongoing condition throughout my ownership, not a single isolated incident. The movement is especially noticeable at highway speeds and can be clearly seen from inside the vehicle while driving. I am concerned that the amount of hood movement could present a safety risk while the vehicle is being operated. I contacted a Mitsubishi dealership regarding the hood flutter and was told they were not aware of this issue. The condition has not been repaired or corrected. Mitsubishi has issued multip…
While operating my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, a strong raw gasoline odor began entering the passenger compartment through the HVAC vents. The odor is present while driving but becomes significantly stronger when the vehicle is stopped and idling. After the engine is turned off, the gasoline odor gradually improves. The condition has occurred repeatedly. I am concerned about occupants being exposed to gasoline vapors inside the passenger compartment and the potential safety risk associated with fuel vapors being present during normal vehicle operation. I contacted a Mitsubishi dealership regarding the problem. The dealer advised that the only open recall currently showing for the vehicle is…
At freeway speeds in the heat the vehicle intermittently and suddenly flashes yellow check engine light and vehicle shakes as it loses most of the engine power, forcing a slow or stop to "limp it" off the highway. No warnings no noises no change in emissions noted. Calls to dealerships and have been told they don't know what it is and haven't heard of any issues.
Driving down the road and the engine shuts off. Yes its available upon request. I have reported it to my mechanic. The safety is me and others as this has happened 3 times in the past 2 weeks in the middle of traffic. My mechanic has been the only one to look at the car and doesnt know what is wrong. When the car shuts off the battery light comes on and the car said airbag system service required on 09/13/2026 but went off a few hrs later. The problems started on 09/02/2026
This vehicle exhibits a severe and dangerous acceleration hesitation, accompanied by a sudden, momentary loss of engine torque when pulling out from stops or trying to merge onto highways. This unexpected loss of power leaves the vehicle stranded briefly in oncoming traffic, creating an immediate crash hazard. This failure matches the exact physical defect and symptoms detailed in NHTSA Recall 16V563000 (Mitsubishi Campaign SR-16-006). The dangerous safety defect is actively persisting whether the remedy was already completed or not (Mitsubishi states that my vehicle is not included in the recallâthis is not trueâwhich will be explained in more detail at the end of this description. In …

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opens these when complaints point to a possible safety defect. Many end in a recall.
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-spe
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Ele

In complaints filed with NHTSA for model years 2010–2027, owners most often name: power train, electrical system, engine. 1,380 complaints are on record.
No. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. A technical service bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers how to fix a known issue; it is not a safety recall and is usually covered only under warranty. A recall is a formal safety action, and its repair is free.
File a vehicle safety complaint at NHTSA.gov. NHTSA reads every report, and patterns of complaints are what open defect investigations and, eventually, recalls.
