Virginia's Data

Image of Virginia

Virginia (officially the Commonwealth of Virginia) is a state in the Southeastern U.S., one of the original 13 colonies (statehood in 1788). It’s sometimes called the “Mother of States” (as portions of its colonial territory formed several other states) and “Mother of Presidents” (8 U.S. presidents were born here). Richmond is the capital, and Virginia Beach is the most populous city. Virginia’s land area is about 39,490 sq mi, and its population is ~8.81 million (2024). The state’s geography ranges from the Appalachian Mountains in the west to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast in the east. Northern Virginia is part of the Washington, D.C. metro area and is densely populated. Virginia’s economy is very diverse, with key sectors including government and defense (the Pentagon is in Arlington, many federal workers live in VA), technology (Northern Virginia has a large tech corridor and data centers), agriculture (tobacco historically, now poultry, cattle, and wineries), and shipbuilding (Norfolk is home to a major naval base). The state’s nominal GDP was about $759 billion in 2024. Historically, Virginia was the site of the first permanent English colony (Jamestown, 1607) and a central theater of the Civil War. Culturally, it balances its historic Southern identity (colonial Williamsburg, Civil War battlefields) with modern suburban life in the D.C. suburbs. The state also has strong education institutions (University of Virginia, College of William & Mary) and is known for its contributions to American ideals and leadership from the colonial era onward.

Understanding the BLS and Inflation in Virginia

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a government agency that collects and analyzes economic data across the U.S., including states like Virginia. One of its key responsibilities is tracking inflation through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures how the cost of everyday goods and services changes over time. Inflation can impact everything from housing prices to the cost of groceries, gas, and utilities across the area. By tracking inflation, the BLS helps people from Virginia understand how their purchasing power is affected and provides insights for businesses and policymakers.

What This Graph Represents

This graph shows inflation trends in Virginia using the CPI, highlighting how prices have changed over time. The x-axis represents time (months and years), while the y-axis represents price levels. If the graph moves upward, it means the cost of living is rising, which can affect everything from rent to gas prices. A flatter or downward trend suggests that inflation is stabilizing or decreasing. Keeping an eye on inflation is important for people from Virginia when budgeting for housing, wages, and daily expenses.
