Image of Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a state in the South Central U.S., admitted in 1907 as the 46th state (it was formed from Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory). Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city. Oklahoma’s land area is about 68,595 sq mi, and its population is ~4.10 million (2024). The state lies at the crossroads of the Great Plains, Ozark Plateau, and southern U.S. regions, and is prone to tornadoes (part of “Tornado Alley”). It has a large Native American population and many tribal headquarters, reflecting that more than 60 Native nations were relocated to the region in the 19th century. Oklahoma’s economy has significant energy sector influence – it’s a major producer of oil and natural gas. Agriculture (wheat, cattle) and aerospace (maintenance and manufacturing) are also pillars of the economy. In recent years, logistics and service industries have grown around the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. The state’s nominal GDP was about $265 billion in 2024. Culturally, Oklahoma is known for its cowboy and Western heritage (home of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum), Native American cultures, and country music (the musical Oklahoma! famously celebrated its territory days). The state also has a history of frontier lawmen and outlaws, and is remembered for the tragic Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s (depicted in Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath).

Understanding the BLS and Inflation in Oklahoma

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a government agency that collects and analyzes economic data across the U.S., including states like Oklahoma. One of its key responsibilities is tracking inflation through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures how the cost of everyday goods and services changes over time. Inflation can impact everything from housing prices to the cost of groceries, gas, and utilities across the area. By tracking inflation, the BLS helps people from Oklahoma understand how their purchasing power is affected and provides insights for businesses and policymakers.

What This Graph Represents

This graph shows inflation trends in Oklahoma using the CPI, highlighting how prices have changed over time. The x-axis represents time (months and years), while the y-axis represents price levels. If the graph moves upward, it means the cost of living is rising, which can affect everything from rent to gas prices. A flatter or downward trend suggests that inflation is stabilizing or decreasing. Keeping an eye on inflation is important for people from Oklahoma when budgeting for housing, wages, and daily expenses.
